Greg Godovitz
"GODO in the GROTTO" - Up Close and Uncomfortable at AXE Music 110 4040 Blackfoot Trails SE Calgary, Aberta, Canada, ”Thursday May 29th, 2008 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM"
*********************************************
Greg Godovitz, Icon of the Canadian Rock Scene, after recently relocating a lifetime of performance in Toronto to Calgary, lands at AXE Music to host an evening of repartee based loosely upon his 2005 DVD entitled Up Close and Uncomfortable... "an evening of performance recreating Greg's body of work from the past 40 years, with an up close and personal component of Greg's story telling talents included". Greg will not only re-capture the music of his past in an Up Close and Uncomfortable Fashion, but he will revel us with stories of the business of music in Canada, and what it was, and is like to be a professional musician in this country.

Tickets only $20 (including GST), available at AXE Music, in person (4040 Blackfoot trail S.E., or by phone… (243-5200, or 1 800 293 0982), for what promises to be an evening none of us is soon to forget!!!
***********************************************

As one of the founders of Fludd, one of Canada's dominant groups during the early seventies, or as the man behind Goddo, perhaps one of this country's most influential groups of the 70's and 80's, Greg Godovitz has seen it all in Canadian music. Never sacrificing his ethics for the sake of a "trendy hit", Greg has always maintained a level of standard mostly forgotten by today's stars ... For him, stardom just came naturally...
Frustrated with the direction Fludd was going, Godovitz left to form Goddo along with guitarist Gino Scarpelli and drummer Marty Morin in 1975. They put out an independent 45 which featured a copy of The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" later that year, and continued to pay their dues in dimly-lit bars the next couple of years until they were signed to a deal with Polydor, releasing their self-titled debut in '77.
GODDO spawned no “real” hits, but tracks like "Sweet Thing" let it be known they were a talented trio with a fresh, straight-forward approach to recording, utilizing few overdubs and creating a “raw sound” they would later become known for in a near-unprecedented fashion.
odovitz released his memoirs of the Canadian music scene called “TRAVELS WITH MY AMP” also on Bullseye Records. TRAVELS WITH MY AMP reveals some of the most lucid accounts of what “really” went on with life on the road in the 70s and the 80s. A “tell all” book… with no holds barred, Godovitz makes no apologies for what he did and saw, as he chased the rock ‘n” roll dream. Travels With My Amp delivers a very engaging trip down memory lane for those old enough to remember, and a great introduction to the excesses of the rock ‘n” roll lifestyle, to those to young to not. Greg toured Canada to promote the book through 2001, and that footage, along with a first-time, live acoustic performance at Hugh's Room in Toronto in 2004, became the basis for a solo DVD, UP CLOSE AND UNCOMFORTABLE. This live set includes personal, backstage and behind the scenes footage, sharing with us just how talented this monarch of Canadian Music truly is, as well as revealing what a great story teller he can be. It’s one thing to have lived life, but another altogether to relay with passion and intimacy what that life was to others… something Greg does, second to none.
In 2003 Godovitz along with Bob Segarini, drummer Doug Inglis, keyboardist Brad Lovatt, guitarist Steve Jensen, and bassist Mike Pellarin, released a CD self-titled under the name The Anger Brothers. The core of that band and that album became the basis for a brand new Goddo record -- 2003's "Kings of The Stoned Age" on Bullseye, and the band toured Southern Ontario in support of the album, which saw two radio singles hit the airwaves "Rock Star" and "Such A Fool".
2005 saw a change in Goddo’s line up as guitarist Gino Scarpelli left after what seemed like an eternity in the trenches. Taking his place on lead guitar was Steve Shelski from Coney Hatch, who was joined by Anger Brothers keyboardist Brad "Mr. Anger" Lovatt, fleshing out the line-up with original Goddo members Godovitz and Inglis. With this new line up, the band could dig deeper into their seven-record catalog and perform most material live, which was not possible with their traditional 3-piece line up.
In 2006 Greg Godovitz along with Bob Reid began Rock Talk, a weekly Toronto based radio talk show on 1010 CFRB, with a rich variety of musical guests and topics from all corners of the rock and roll world, past and present. Rock Talk has been wonderfully received on the airwaves, and again has allowed Greg to shine in another format as only he can!
That same year Godovitz began working in the studio producing the Canadian rock group Three Quarter Stone on their debut CD "It Starts Right Here". Although known as an accomplished producer for Goddo's albums under the pseudonym "Thomas Morley-Turner", work as a Producer on this CD, and that of other up-and-coming Canadian bands has helped to keep Godovitz at the forefront of the Canadian music scene, not because of past successes, but because of continued skill in recognizing and shaping new music talent and song hits.
In 2007 Linus Entertainment finally released the "An Act Of Goddo In Church" DVD called 'Live' featuring the band's historic 1979 broadcast from CHUM FM and City TVs first ever stereo multi-media simulcast.
Also in 2007 Canadian label Bullseye Records indicated there were plans to release two double-disc anthology sets called "Under My Hat" featuring alternate takes, live material and rare B sides.
And just recently, after a lifetime in Toronto, Godovitz somehow heard the call of the wild, and up and brought his rock ‘n’ roll show west to Calgary. Naturally enough, one of the first places Greg would land would be AXE Music, and we ask you to please join us May 29th, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., as AXE Music presents:
